An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
One account, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However the odds had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.
Several of other individuals also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
A bill presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to wager on everything from elections to political events.
