Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state early analysis show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for details.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism rendered him without words and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
