Donald Trump's System of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's intense desire for retribution has swiftly transformed into a structured framework. Over the twelve months, the leader's anger and caprices have taken on the guise of official policies similar to analogous to earlier authoritarian regimes. Government figures who fail to comply are promptly dismissed and succeeded by supporters. Critical officials who challenge him risk legal action, trial and penalties. Opponents have been categorized under administration directives as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and warned with legal action as “extremists”.

Government Institutions Restructured

Each instance involving prosecution of political opponents and leniency for his allies demonstrates its own particular qualities. However, notwithstanding their specific form, they embody examples of what has developed as a calculated method. These episodes are not isolated. Trump's cleansing of Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI agents, coupled with his appointment of loyalists in key positions, began quickly, soon took on a consistency, and has now been molded into a system. The justice department and the Federal Bureau have been restructured into political organizations under his explicit orders to carry out his demands. Wrongdoing has been made standard. This is the retribution system.

Management is preoccupied with targeting the chief's alleged adversaries than they are with safeguarding our country's safety.

Within the Structure

The foundation of this system has been exposed in the legal complaint of several previous senior Federal Bureau officials filed in September in the judicial system in the capital against top official an administration figure and top lawyer another official for unlawful firing in “a initiative of payback against them for what the accused judged to be a refusal to exhibit proper devotion”. The document states that one official, the former acting FBI director, recounts a discussion in which the director “openly acknowledged the impropriety of his behavior”.

Driscoll had tried to protect FBI agents from being terminated, the complaint claims. He advised him that “White House figures” – perceived by him to be the White House and federal prosecutors – had ordered him to dismiss all those who they determined as having worked on a law enforcement case against him. The complaint adds: “He clarified that he had to fire the individuals his leaders told him to dismiss, because his ability to keep his own role was contingent on the dismissal of the personnel who handled investigations involving the President. He explained that there was no way he or Driscoll could do to prevent these or any other terminations, because ‘the bureau sought to incarcerate the President in jail and he recalls it clearly.’” When the official advised Patel he was breaking the FBI's own internal rules, the director supposedly said “he recognized that and he realized the character of the swift terminations were almost certainly improper”.

Widespread Impact

Since the director's claimed confession to him, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and repurposed for the administration's retribution system. Six of the bureau's top officials were terminated or compelled to leave in the initial period of the administration. Roughly 4,500 lawyers at the department have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of seven DoJ lawyers, including those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in objection over what they regarded as partisan influence in dropping the legal action against the city leader, the mayor, in exchange for his assistance with the administration's ICE arrests of foreign nationals. The anti-corruption unit of the department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The civil rights division has been devastated: the majority of its employees has departed. One-third of senior leaders at DoJ have resigned. The division upholding ecological regulations has lost 50% its leadership.

Rewards and Sanctions

Concerning the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the NY office, she, stepped down in objection against what she described as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, Trump's “border czar,” showed up as the implementer with Adams on television to declare: “Unless he complies, I will return in New York City.”. Additionally, another figure, previously the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the deal, was awarded an judicial position, a possible stepping stone to the supreme court.

Trump's exemption for wrongdoings perpetrated while in office, awarded by the unprecedented decision of the GOP-led on the supreme court, thus thwarting his prosecution over the political violence and preserving his political viability for the 2024 election, is the foundation stone on which he depends to protect his stalwarts. With such immunity, he has been liberated to enable corruption. The impact of the supreme court decision permeates his government and the political party down to its bones. The court matter has escalated. In the words of the former president's legal adviser the figure commented about the Watergate
