2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a more defined direction.
The president expressed that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
This announcement mirrors a similar action taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the entire message from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. Following a period of conversations, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.
Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben soon. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the progress of the game in the months to come.
David
Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that change every session. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your group can secure victory? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as creation advances.
