The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
