Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
