White House Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Approaches Third Week

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the very day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
